He signed with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League in 2005 with a two-year contract after his success from Frolunda HC. His debut match was on 8th October 2005; he soon struck 30 wins to break the New York Rangers' franchise record wins by newcomer goaltender.

Lundqvist signed a one-year contract extension with the Rangers in 2007 for $4.25 million. Later, on 13 February 2008, he signed a six-year extension contract for $41.25 million with the Rangers, averaging $6.875 million per season.

Because of his skills, he again signed a contract for seven years for $59.5 million with an average annual cap hit of $8.5 million.
